The Oval is one of the earliest houses built in Dunster. The house was originally a hall house, one large room with a fire central to it. Everyone who lived in the house shared one or two rooms, including the animals if the weather was especially harsh.

The fireplace is likely to have been on the street side, rather than where it is now, like the orange and black ‘cobb’ cottage you see further down the street. At this time - around 1320-40s - the other houses in the street would have been The Stag pub (which also had a wooden screen until a hundred or so years ago) and Spears Cross, the B and B further up West Street going towards the castle. The rest of this part of West Street probably had temporary houses of wattle and daub filling in the gaps. Some of the other smaller cottages between here and Spears Cross would have been built after the Black Death of 1348.

The wood panelling in the hallway is extremely old – you can see marks throughout where the carpenters have worked it by hand. It’s likely the screen in the hallway was added around 1450 -1500 to enclose the hall house, giving a mezzanine level where the main bedroom is now. It is unusual for this to remain as they were mostly pulled down in the Victorian era as walls were added.

The cruck beams in the main bedroom are of historical importance for this area of West Somerset. They are made from one large piece of wood and, unusually, they retain their original wooden pegs and holes. The craftsmanship and size of the beams suggest the person who built The Oval would have been wealthy. The beams came from the local area and are of historical significance, hence the Grade II listing.

The basic structure of the house is cob, which is a wooden frame filled with rubble, stones and held together with lime plaster. This is the 1366 building - slap bang in the middle of the medieval period.

During the Tudor period, the wooden screen was added and probably the fireplace was moved to the wall (rather than the middle of the downstairs) and a staircase was added.

In 1810 there was a fire that devastated the cottage, and changes were made as a result.

In the Victorian era we think the twin bedroom was added. And at some point in the 1960 or 70s, an extension was added at the back to create a larger kitchen and the dining room.

Dunster is the largest remaining intact medieval village in England. Almost all the properties on West Street, Church Street and the High Street are listed to protect their unique architecture. For more than a century, Québec City’s Fairmont Le Château Frontenac has been the true-life castle of many people’s dreams… Everyone - young and old, music and film stars, sports personalities and political figures - enjoys discovering Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and delights in returning again and again.
After Les Châteaux Saint Louis and Haldimand, residences of the French and English governors for over two centuries, Cape Diamond had lost its prestige and successive plans for a grand hotel in Québec City never materialized.
By the late 19th century, William Van Horne, President of Canadian Pacific Railways (C.P.R.), had raised enough funds to build the ideal stopover for C.P.R. travellers, Le Château Frontenac. Van Horne retained the services of the New York architect Bruce Price, who had already designed Montréal’s Windsor Station and who, incidentally, was the father of the American writer Emily Post. Drawing on the architectural styles of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Price immortalized the history of the two great powers that had occupied Québec City’s highest promontory.
On December 18, 1893 the first wing of Fairmont Le Château Frontenac was inaugurated. it had 170 rooms, 93 of which had bathrooms and fireplaces, remarkable luxuries at the time. The Hotel also included three magnificent suites—the Habitant, the Chinoise and the Hollandaise.
Several extensions followed until 1993 to build the hotel as it stands today with its 610 rooms, spread over 18 floors. The citadel wing was built in 1899, followed by the Mont-Carmel wing in 1908. The Saint-Louis wing and the central tower, whose look resembles the dungeons of medieval castles, were built between 1920 and 1924. Following a fire in 1926, an original section of the hotel was reconstructed from architect price's original plans. A new expansion phase was completed in June 1993 with the Claude-Pratte wing, which offers Château Frontenac guests an indoor pool, a fitness center and a magnificent outdoor terrace.
Today, Fairmont le Château Frontenac rises even more proudly on cap diamant, always ready to receive its guests from around the world in a pleasant, elegant and refined atmosphere.

The Château Frontenac is proud to have welcomed King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939. A luxurious suite has also been designated in honor of the official visits of Queen Elizabeth II and his Excellency the Duke of Edinburgh. T-he Princess Grace of Monaco and Prince Rainier III occupied a suite of the Château during their presidency of the Queen’s Ball at the Quebec Winter Carnival in February 1969. For the highest honor of the Château Frontenac, many other royalty members have visited the Quebec castle, including Prince Andrew and Lady Sarah Ferguson of England.

In August of 1943 and again in September of 1944, Le Château Frontenac became the center of the Quebec Conferences of World War II involving U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. The heads of the Allies held talks that proved decisive to prosecuting the war to a successful conclusion. The Château has been the host of many other American and Canadian political figures over the years: Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Pierre Eliott Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, and many more. Located along the shores of Dubai’s iconic Creek the Al Seef development is an exciting new cultural tourism space that merges the city’s past with its present.

GAJ were responsible for the design of the overall master plan, along with the design and construction supervision of the eastern section (phases 2 and 3) which follows a more traditional heritage style.

For this unique project it was essential that we first appreciated the extent and requirement of preserving and showcasing traditional Emirati architecture and local trades. The challenge was to design the buildings as if they had always been there withstanding the test of time through aging techniques and carefully calculated degradation percentages. Water marks, caulking and bulges in the edges all contribute to achieve this, as well as specifically chosen materials and finishes unique to local conditions of the time.

The eastern section includes a number of heritage style cluster buildings with the intention of recreating the memory of old Dubai along the banks of the Dubai Creek and extending the existing historical district of Bastakiya.

This started with the masterplan which was to act as the guiding principle of the development to ensure a cohesive vernacular architecture based on local heritage building principles and construction materials, reflecting local traditions as well as the environmental, cultural and historical context.
Each house or building within the project has a story of its own. Some buildings are designed to look as if they were built in 1960s with darker walls, less lighting and simple decorative elements, while others have lighter walls with much more intricate details and embellishments on the façade which indicates that they were built at a later stage when trade was good and businesses were doing well. The colours used for the buildings were based on traditional Dubai sandstone.
Attention to detail was crucial for this project and the team spent many hours researching the era visiting museums and old souqs as well as trawling through old news stories and photographs for inspiration to ensure that the finished product was as authentic as possible. It was important to ensure that elements, such as cornices, ironmongery and wooden doors, were as close to the original as practicable. Chandals, pergolas and barasti, which have been used in Emirati architecture for many years, have been cleverly incorporated as shading or screening to hide modern equipment and many of the fixtures are reclaimed items.

The result is a beautifully transformed area that brings to life an important era in Dubai’s fascinating history providing an authentic heritage experience and a stunning leisure, retail and dining location.

Since the year 1685 the Heiskanen family has provided travelers visiting Porosalmi in the northern part of beautiful Lake Saimaa with exceptional hospitality and services. In the beginning, a strong incentive for establishing the resort was an agreement between the Czar of Russia and the King of Sweden to build and maintain a road (an ice road during winter) through Finland. At the time, it was stipulated that a location for feeding horses and to accommodate travelers would need to be established at 30 km intervals along the way. Porosalmi just happened to be located in one of these places.

Tapio and Eila Heiskanen had four sons who all grew up in Porosalmi and one of the sons, Jari Heiskanen, formed Järvisydän with his wife Raija. Jari and Raija had two children, one of them son Markus Heiskanen who at the beginning of 21st century started to host Järvisydän. He is now keeping a guest house in 11th generation.

Markus as young and eager host has built some more villas, hotel, Finnish Sauna World, tepee restaurant, Restaurant Piikatyttö and Wine Cellar, new Lotjabaari - boat bar, a reception area, the Lake Spa and who knows what other plans there are in the head of Markus...

But despite all enlargements, closest to the heart of the host Markus and the whole Järvisydän household is still the beautiful nature of Porosalmi – in the first place because of it people come to Porosalmi and that’s why the household of Järvisydän still wants to take their guests to the nature to hear stories about its secrets and living in the old times in Porosalmi.

Kincraig Castle and the lands and villages of Kincraig were acquired by Colin MacKenzie, the second son of Rorie Mhor MacKenzie of Redcastle, who died in 1649, and is thought to have come to Kincraig around 1630.
Colin's great-grandson, John V of Kincraig, made over Kincraig to his distant cousin Roderick VII of Redcastle in 1760 and he gave Kincraig to his second son, John. After a very lucrative career in India, John returned to redevelop Kincraig.
The exterior of Kincraig Castle Hotel remains largely unchanged since the early 1800s, however the interior has been extensively modified over the years, to bring it back to and beyond its former glory.
The work was enhanced by John's great-grandson, Sir William Martineau in 1919, when he converted the sandstone castle into the white-harled Scottish Baronial building that you see today.
So, there you have it - a castle from the deep mists of the past that has evolved through generations of the Clan MacKenzie into the now renowned Kincraig Castle Hotel.

Aigli’s history is closely related with the summer of 1807, when Ali Pasas attacks Lefkada. Given the situation, Kapodistrias ask for Katsantonis assistance. With around two hundred men, Katsantonis heads towards Agia Mavra which used to be the name of Lefkada during that period. Arriving in Lefkada, the revolutionists were welcomed with honour by Kapodistrias.

For quite a long time and until the decision of the council which would decide on the next steps of the war, a number of the revolution leaders were hosted in the building of Aigli retreat.

The council of the revolutionists in Lefkada, which was held at “Magemeno” area, was a great success for Katsantonis who became the leader of all the revolution fighters.

The land Broome Lot 194 was purchased in 1904 by George Moss, a stock and station agent of Broome.
The house was originally built by Nellie Talboys who purchased the property in 1910, and it transferred to her husband Harry Talboys in 1913 on her death. Harry was a master mariner and pearler who built a pearling fleet from a single lugger. The property then passed to their son Charles Talboys, business manager on Harry's death in 1933. T.H. 'Bert' Kennedy purchased it in 1945. Bert's daughter Nita Jean and her husband Peter Haynes moved into the house soon after they married in the 1940s and raised their family here.
In 1982 the property transferred to Fieldon Pty Ltd. It became the residence of Lord Alistair McAlpine during his time in Broome. In 1997, he sold it to Colin and Cheryl Wilkinson who modified the premises to a guest house, which opened in 1998. In 1999 it was purchased by Marilynne Paspaley AM, a member of the successful Paspaley pearling family operating in Broome and the Kimberley since the 1930s. It now operates as a premium boutique hotel of 8 rooms, known as Pinctada McAlpine House.

Lord McAlpine carried out certain restoration work when he purchased the property. Today, two of the original bedrooms remain as built, with the middle lounge room sacrificed to provide ensuites to the two guest rooms on what is now called the Pearlers Verandah. Lord McAlpine's master bedroom has been preserved with its large ensuite. The original layout of the residence is evident and retains its intended residential function. The property retains a moderate degree of integrity and authenticity.

The style of construction was specifically simple to suit the climate and also the need to ship all building materials from Perth. The corrugated iron sheets (today known as mini-orb) used for walls was flat-packed, the rafters and timber framing was the hardwood Jarrah and the corrugated roofing panels were all practical materials which minimised the volume of materials shipped and therefore the freight costs. They require little maintenance and survive particularly well in the climate of the region. The large verandahs provided shade and a generous flow of air for outdoor enjoyment around the enclosed rooms. There was no embellishment other than the hand-made lattice screens, and overall the property exhibits a very practical approach to the use of materials and a construction style that suits the climate and shows a knowledge of the movement of the sun, the sea breezes and the rain storms.

Like many towns in the Middle Ages, Ghent was enclosed by several canals. These were meant to protect the town from the dangers that threatened its inhabitants. Near the gate (“poort” in Dutch) leading into town, there was a field (“akker” in Dutch) : the Poortackere. In this field a complex for beguines was built, which was also called Poortackere by the people of Ghent. In one of the walls of the building there is an 18th century stone which reveals that the beguine house was founded in 1278. Not long after this, a chapel and a churchyard were added. Poortackere mainly housed older and sick beguines.

When during the French revolution all cloisters, churches, and beguine complexes were seized by the town councils, the council of Ghent confiscated Poortackere. In 1863 the site was sold to the Count Joseph De Hemptinne, a notorious Maecenas of the Neogothic Movement. With his permission, a congregation was housed here. At first there were plans to restore the old buildings, but in the end a new, neogothic cloister was built. Most buildings of Poortackere date from that period. A new chapel, two inside gardens, and an orphanage became part of the complex.

After World War II the site was successively an orphanage, a house for young women, and a student residence. In 1998 there were still 6 nuns living here, but due to the extravagant maintenance costs the buildings were sold. Thanks to private initiative, the site has been transformed into a hotel, guest rooms, seminar centre and a restaurant. As a result, everybody can now enjoy its architecture and its unique atmosphere.
